Indian-Kheema-Minced-Mutton

Kheema (Indian Spiced Minced Mutton with Peas)

There’s always that one dish that your Mother makes the best and this is one of my Mother’s best!  Kheema is a traditional Indian dish that is often made with minced mutton (you can substitute for minced chicken, beef etc) and peas or potatoes.

Indian-Kheema-Minced-Mutton

Ingredients

4-5 tbsp oil
2 medium onions, chopped
1 tbsp ginger, minced
1 tbsp ginger, julienne
1 tbsp garlic, minced
2 medium tomatoes, puréed
Salt to taste
10-12 whole black peppercorns
5-6 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 tbsp cumin seeds
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
2-3 tsp coriander-cumin powder
1 bunch coriander leaves, chopped
1 cup peas, frozen or fresh
250 grams minced mutton, with or without bones

Instructions

1
Heat oil and add cumin seeds, black peppercorns, cloves and cinnamon. Let fry for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
2
Add onions and cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
3
Add ginger and garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
4
Add turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander-cumin powder and half of the coriander leaves.
5
Add the tomato puree and let cook for 4-5 minutes or until oil starts to ooze out.
6
Mix in the peas and minced meat with bones as well as 1/2 cup water. Add some more in the cooking process if the meat starts sticking to the frying pan.
7
Mix and season with salt. Don't forget to break apart the meat with your spatula/spoon while it cooks to avoid lumps of meat. Cook for 20-25 minutes over a low flame and finish off with a sprinkle of the remaining coriander leaves.
8
Serve hot with chapati's, rice or bread and a side of kachumbari.
